Facial veins, or telangiectasias, are tiny little vessels that appear just beneath the surface of facial skin, typically around the nose and on the cheeks. As we age, our skin loses collagen and the outer layer of skin becomes thinner. This allows facial veins to show through. Laser treatment of facial veins can help these stubborn cosmetic annoyances disappear.
What is the treatment like?
The treatment is quick and painless. You will not need any type of anesthesia. Ice or a cold pack may be applied to the treatment are to cool the skin. Then, a light gel will be applied to the skin before the laser is used to treat the facial veins. When the laser light is applied, the veins will either disappear completely, or shrink up. Each successive treatment will produce better results. After the treatment, your face may be a bit red and may have some swelling similar to a mosquito bite. We will apply an after-laser cream and sunblock to your face before you go home. You can apply makeup and going back to work if you wish.
How often should I get treatments?
Treatments are usually administered every 3-4 weeks. The veins will reappear at this time, which is usually an indication that another treatment is necessary.
How many treatments are required?
Typically, 3 to 6 treatments are required depending on the width of the vessel, the number of veins, the location, and the condition of your skin.
Is there any downtime?
Typically, there is no downtime, however, some people have reported that the treated area gets darker, like sunburn, for three or four days.
Will the veins go away forever?
The veins will go away for a longer period of time – from one to three years, depending on your skin’s age and how well you protect your skin. People with extremely thin skin and who have frequent sun exposure may see the veins reappear more quickly.
What type of laser do you use?
To treat your facial veins, there are several types of lasers that can be used, including KTP, nd:YAG, and IPL. In our office, we utilize an FDA approved intense pulsed light device with a filter specifically targeted at veins. We chose this device for safety and efficacy.
Who performs the treatments?
Our nationally certified laser technicians, with advanced training and continuing medical education credits from Harvard Medical School perform the treatments under the direction of our medical director, Dr. Ban Vu.
Do I need to make an appointment?
